With heavy hearts, the Pembroke Pines community is mourning the deaths of John Baker, 62, and his wife, Joanne Baker, 59, whose lives came to a tragic end in Pembroke Pines. Authorities said the couple was found unresponsive Monday morning in the 8300 block of Pine Drive after Pembroke Pines Police officers and paramedics responded to a 911 call. John and Joanne were pronounced dead at the scene.

For many in Pembroke Pines, John Baker’s death represents the loss of a longtime public servant who devoted nearly three decades of his life to the community. Baker joined the Pembroke Pines Police Department in 1994 and spent almost 28 years serving as an officer and sergeant.
During his career, Baker was a founding member of the department’s Crisis Response Team, reflecting his commitment to helping people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. His service extended beyond traditional police duties as he supported organizations and community causes, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Special Olympics Torch Run, and Special Compass, a local nonprofit dedicated to helping children and families living with disabilities.
In 2019, Baker was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash while on duty. The injuries affected his speech and movement, beginning a difficult road toward recovery. Despite those challenges, he regained limited motor skills and, according to his department, continued to be remembered for his joyful and positive personality.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department described Baker as a dedicated father of three who treasured his family. Away from his work, he enjoyed traveling and music and frequently attended concerts with his loved ones.
